Lucia At Skansen

The Lucia celebrations are a cherished part of the Swedish Christmas traditions and Skansen has played an important role in establishing and preserving this beloved tradition.

The founder of Skansen, Artur Hazelius, wanted to highlight traditional Swedish customs and make them accessible to a wider audience. The first Lucia procession at Skansen was held in 1893, and the tradition continues to this day, with concerts, Lucia processions and other activities taking place in December.

Every year, the 18th-century Seglora Church provides an atmospheric setting for a traditional Lucia procession and concert around 13 December. At the Temperance Hall, you can step back in time to the 1920s and experience a traditional Lucia celebration as it might have looked during an era when the tradition was becoming increasingly popular throughout Sweden.

Students from Stockholm Music Gymnasium form a traditional Lucia procession that makes its way through Skansen before taking to the stage for a concert filled with beautiful singing and Lucia songs.

At the historic Temperance Hall, children from the Spektrumkören choir perform beautiful Lucia songs, bringing to life the atmosphere of a celebration in a Swedish community hall a century ago.
