Atlantic Herring / Baltic Herring (Clupea harengus)
The Atlantic herring, known as “Baltic herring” in the Baltic Sea, is a silvery schooling fish found throughout the region. In the Baltic Sea north of Kalmarsund, it is called “Baltic herring” (strömming), while in the south and on the west coast it is called “herring” (sill).
Herring is a key species, both as an important food source for larger predatory fish and for humans, with a long tradition of fishing.
Today, stocks are considered threatened due to overfishing and environmental toxins.
