Holidays and traditions

Many of the year’s biggest holidays and traditions are celebrated at Skansen. The park is buzzing with life, new and old traditions, and fun activities – come and celebrate with us!

  • Skansen’s founder, Artur Hazelius, created new traditions and soon linked Skansen to many of the traditions that are now considered classically Swedish. Just six months after Skansen opened, Walpurgis Night was first celebrated here – albeit on a modest scale. The following year, Hazelius came up with the idea of celebrating Sweden’s National Day on 6 June, and later that year the first Lucia procession made its way through the park. Find out more about all the holidays and traditions that you can celebrate here at Skansen.

Holidays with love and dancing

  • Skansen’s folk dance group brings Sweden’s dance traditions to life during our celebrations, while Skansen’s folk musicians provide the music.

  • Come and say “I do!” at Skansen. Weddings can be booked all year round at several of our beautiful locations. In the beginning of June, we also have drop-in weddings. Come and join us on the most romantic day of the year.

  • Here, you can celebrate a traditional christening at Seglora Church or a naming ceremony in one of our beautiful locations. Come and commemorate all the festivals of life – and the year – at Skansen.
