Holidays and traditions

Many of the year’s biggest holidays and traditions are celebrated at Skansen. The park is buzzing with life, new and old traditions, and fun activities – come and celebrate with us!

  • Skansen’s founder, Artur Hazelius, created new traditions and soon linked Skansen to many of the traditions that are now considered classically Swedish. Just six months after Skansen opened, Walpurgis Night was first celebrated here – albeit on a modest scale. The following year, Hazelius came up with the idea of celebrating Sweden’s National Day on 6 June, and later that year the first Lucia procession made its way through the park.
